NEWCASTLE WIPED FROM THE BOARD

-->

Member for Newcastle, Tim Crakanthorp, has today called on Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian to explain why references to Newcastle – the state’s second largest city - have been removed from electronic display boards across the City Rail network.

Mr Crakanthorp has been contacted by commuters concerned that train information boards for the Sydney to Newcastle line are displaying Hamilton station only. There is no reference to Newcastle and no indication that the Newcastle shuttle bus service operates to Wickham, Civic and Newcastle stations.

At this time of year, when visitor numbers to Newcastle are increasing – and 30,000 people are expected to attend Asian Football Cup games in Newcastle, with many visiting for the first time – the confusion is an ‘own goal’.

“This is just another example of the poor planning decisions being made in the rush to cut the rail line to Newcastle. Unnecessarily confusing tourists and commuters on how to travel to the Newcastle CBD will only have negative impacts on local businesses and tourism generally.

“Where is the revitalisation process in these plans?” Mr Crakanthorp said.

Calls to Transport for NSW appear to confirm that indicator boards no longer refer to Newcastle as a destination.
