Member for Newcastle, Tim Crakanthorp, has announced Jillian Green as the 2018 Newcastle Local Grandparent of the Year.
Jillian is a single grandparent who is raising six of her grandchildren, works full time with the Aboriginal Legal Service and is active in the community as an advocate for Aboriginal rights.
The children are active with school and sports commitments; with one child representing the state in touch football and the others are active in regional athletics and netball. Jillian is involved with each child’s training schedules and school commitments.
With other grandchildren who don’t live with her, she has had to defer her studies in law and advocacy, in order to keep in contact with all.
Grandparents work tirelessly in our community volunteering their time to support their families and sharing wisdom with the next generation and it’s time we remind them that the difference they make does not go unnoticed.
NSW Grandparents Day, which falls in October every year, is a chance for us to recognise the important work they do to strengthen our communities and say thank you for their immense contributions.
2018 Grandparents Day will take place on Sunday 28 October 2018.
